Breaking Down Project Quality Management: A Better Understanding

Writer's picture: Hunter TurnerHunter Turner

Project quality management is exactly what it sounds like, the surety of meeting quality standards created during project planning throughout the process and until the project's completion. However, we can break down this topic into three sections that will better help you understand exactly what is required of a quality manager and how those expectations can be achieved.

Quality Management Planning

The first step in almost all of our management processes is planning, and quality management follows suit. This phase involves identifying what level of quality shareholders require of the product as well as determining the standards of quality to be utilized

throughout development. Just as we discuss in our project planning article, this stage of the process is one of the most important parts of development. The more clear the plan the more likely the process will go smoothly and your team will be able to avoid common pitfalls of development like overbudget production costs and delayed deliverable periods.

Quality Management Assurance

These quality standards don't just disappear after the planning phase, they must be upheld concurrently with development. Course corrections are imperative during this phase of quality management as the earlier you catch the drops in quality the easier it is to fix, once you get later into development it becomes exponentially more costly to reset and redo work. This idea can be applied across the stack of project management, catch issues the earliest you can and both your team and your stakeholders will thank you.

Quality Management Control

Finally we have quality control. This is the clerical process of issuing checks to ensure quality is up to par and recording the results. This is how you can identify which areas are dropping below your quality expectations and pivot to successfully put them back on track. Alongside assurance and planning, these three processes aid in identifying and upholding a determined level of quality within your project.
